While Wikipedia's mission is to provide a free encyclopedia for global use and contribution, the extent to which it fosters global contribution remains unclear. This study delves into the relationship between Wikipedia's founding ideals and the policies and practices of its editorial community. Through a case study of a polarized talk page debate, we uncover the distinct cultural character of the English-language Wikipedia community. Our analysis reveals tensions among the values of Wikipedia editors, the mission statement, and the broader global community of readers, shedding light on the complexities of Wikipedia's operation and its impact on global knowledge dissemination.
