This study investigates the adoption and utilization of social software by different types of online enterprise communities, analyzing 188 highly active communities. It identifies significant variations in community size, demographics, and participation levels, alongside differences in how communities use social software tools for resource sharing and relationship building. The findings suggest tailored design implications for community support features, services for prospective members, and strategies for organizations aiming to leverage value from online groups, emphasizing the need for a nuanced approach to support diverse community types and their unique software appropriation practices.
