This study evaluates the impact of information seeding on the formation and development of online communities, using OpenStreetMap as a case study. Analyzing contributions from over 577,000 contributors, the study examines the effects of seeding with data from the U.S. Census. Contrary to expectations, the study finds that higher levels of information seeding can actually lower follow-on contributions and contributor activity, potentially disincentivizing long-term quality. However, seeding does benefit densely populated urban areas and does not discourage more committed users, suggesting nuanced effects on community dynamics.
