This paper examines the comparative effectiveness of movie-based online community evaluations (CE) and film expert evaluations in predicting new movies' box office revenues. Utilizing data from Fandango over a 16-month period, covering 373 movie releases, the study finds that online community members' evaluations significantly differ from those of film reviewers and possess greater predictive power regarding a movie's opening week box office performance. These findings suggest that film studios and movie-goers might benefit more from considering online community evaluations over professional critics' opinions for decision-making purposes. The research highlights the value of online consumer communities in forecasting the success of new movies, providing practical implications for film industry stakeholders.
