Despite efforts to foster teacher collegiality, the privacy of the classroom remains a challenge. Online communication tools present opportunities for teachers to overcome these boundaries within professional communities of practice. This study investigates the success of two cohorts of preservice teachers in building community both in class and online, and examines factors influencing their ability to create community. Findings indicate that the physical and pedagogical contexts of the classroom, along with the implementation of communication tools, play crucial roles in facilitating community-building efforts.
