This paper discusses the success indicators of online communities, emphasizing the importance of understanding both quantitative metrics (such as number of users and messages) and qualitative aspects (like member satisfaction and commitment). It introduces participatory community-centred development, highlighting the limitations of standard evaluation techniques in capturing the sociability aspect of online communities. The paper proposes two tailored evaluation approaches - one based on ethnography and the other a form of heuristic evaluation. The conclusion sets an agenda for refining these methods to balance practicality and robustness in assessing online communities.
