This study examines the governance practices of organizations within the sharing economy, focusing on how they manage their hosted online communities to enhance participation and strategically direct interactions. Through a comparative case study in Berlin, three key governance practices were identified: scoping community boundaries, nudging social relations, and steering users. These practices, facilitated by both online and offline technologies, serve to both encourage user participation and exert control over community interactions. The research develops a framework explaining the varied use of governance practices and their relationship to organizational value creation, underscoring the dual role of sharing economy organizations as both curators and guardians of online communities.
