This paper discusses the emergence of the sharing economy, highlighting its role in blending the online and offline interaction among community members who both consume and produce goods and services. It introduces the concept of a "hybrid community" to reflect this blend and re-examines existing strategic responses for platform organizations to minimize dependence on such communities. The study calls for an adaptation and potential recasting of existing management theories to better align with the nuances of the sharing economy.
