This article examines the varying levels of engagement with online communities within organizations, challenging the traditional cognitive perspective that attributes non-participation to technology features or individual motivations. Instead, it adopts a practice-based approach (PBA) to explore how participation is influenced by dynamic, collective, historical, and contextual factors. The study, based on the use of collaborative technology at a Mexican University, reveals that technology adoption is shaped by complex forces. It concludes with a discussion on the merits and limitations of PBA, offering insights and practical implications for understanding technology use in organizations.
