This article presents a novel approach to studying online question and answer (Q&A) communities, employing structuration theory and the concept of communities of practice. It argues for a broader perspective in research on Q&A sites, which traditionally focuses on aspects like information retrieval and seeking behaviors, by emphasizing the importance of considering social, technical, and contextual factors. Through analyzing three online Q&A communities as communities of practice, the article demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach, offering a theoretical contribution to the understanding of online Q&A dynamics and social reference more broadly.
