An online survey aimed at understanding why young musicians participate in online music communities revealed that while social interaction plays a role, the primary motivation is related to music itself. Participants, who were generally active musicians with varying levels of formal training, engage in these communities to produce, distribute, and discuss music, facilitated by advances in home studio technology and the internet.
