This study delves into the phenomenon of lurking behavior within online communities, a topic that has been largely overlooked in information systems research. By reviewing existing literature, it identifies a gap concerning the nature and origins of lurking, the propensity of individuals to transition from lurking to active participation (de-lurking), and the dynamic between these behaviors. The article introduces a theoretical framework that connects epistemic curiosity—both as a personality trait and as an emotional-motivational state—to lurking and de-lurking behaviors. It suggests that understanding the psychology of curiosity can significantly advance research on participant behavior in online communities.
