Unauthorised file sharing (UFS) in online communities (OCs) poses a significant intellectual property concern, yet traditional views of UFS as digital piracy do not fully capture its dynamics within OCs. This study proposes a theoretical model that integrates public goods contribution motivations with deterrence theory to explain UFS behavior in OCs. Specifically, two egoistic public goods contribution motivations (warm-glow giving and demand for resources) are examined alongside motivations informed by deterrence theory. The findings reveal that warm glow and demand for resources positively influence UFS in OCs, with warm glow moderated by users' attachment to OCs. Moreover, the study demonstrates that while sanctions predict UFS behavior, their impact becomes insignificant in the presence of warm glow, demand for resources, and attachment. These insights underscore the importance of considering public goods contribution motivations in developing anti-piracy policies and practices.
