This paper diverges from traditional studies focused on the behaviors of online community users to tackle the design challenges of IT platforms that support these communities. It introduces a design theory grounded in the kernel theory, utilizing the comparison between offline and online communities to identify key factors. These factors inform the development of meta-requirements, product features (meta-design), and the design process (design method), along with establishing testable hypotheses for both design product and process. The theory was applied in a case study involving an intelligent multimedia platform designed to provide innovative social e-services for European elderly persons and their social networks, demonstrating the practical application of the proposed design theory.
