This paper proposes a novel model to enhance understanding of how to motivate contributions within online communities (OCs), highlighting the potential roles of both extrinsic and intrinsic rewards. It introduces new variables to examine how various forms of extrinsic incentives, such as gifts, social recognition, and feedback, might influence community member participation. Drawing on insights from organizational behavior and psychology, the model suggests that, contrary to some beliefs, extrinsic rewards can actually enhance intrinsic motivation under certain conditions, offering a nuanced view of motivation in the context of OCs.
