This study examines the mechanisms behind the spread of online rumors, focusing on user discussions in online forums and their impact on individual belief and belief change, guided by informational cascade and group polarization theories. It investigates how these factors influence the intention to spread rumors. A laboratory experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses. The paper concludes with results, implications for combating online rumors, limitations, and a conclusion.
