This study introduces an innovative approach to enhancing interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) by training English language learners to engage in online participatory cultures, with a focus on analyzing their participation through communities of practice. University-level learners in the United States were trained on the practices of a social news site (Reddit) and assigned weekly postings in forums aligned with their interests. Social media metrics measured interaction, while questionnaires and interviews explored learner perceptions of language and cyberpragmatics. While quantitative results showed challenges in achieving high interaction levels, qualitative findings revealed potential benefits for ILP development. The study contributes to best practices for ILP in online spaces and cyberpragmatic awareness, enabling learners to enhance participation in online communities.
