The study investigates the participation of second language (L2) students in English-language university courses conducted both face-to-face and asynchronously online. It examines the nature of academic online discourse, students' experiences in constructing this discourse, and the roles L2 students adopt in online academic settings. Results indicate significant differences between the face-to-face and online courses in terms of language use, attitudes, agency, and participant roles, rather than between native (L1) and second language (L2) speakers. Both modes were effective in fostering academic discourse, yet they presented distinct challenges and opportunities for L2 students.
