This study adopts an ecological perspective to examine how the success of online communities is influenced by their relationships with other communities, analyzing four dimensions: topic overlap, shared members, content linking, and shared offline organizational affiliation. Through a mixed-method analysis of 9,495 online enterprise communities and interviews, findings reveal that both too little and too much topic overlap with other communities can negatively impact a community's activity. The impact of topic overlap is further moderated by shared members, content linking, and organizational affiliations with other communities. These insights offer valuable guidance for online community designers on positioning their communities effectively within the broader ecosystem.
