In the realm of online communities, transferring 'best practices' internally is crucial for enhancing performance. However, there's a debate among organizational scholars regarding how much a recipient unit should modify these practices. While some argue that modifications can undermine effectiveness, others suggest adaptation is necessary. This research introduces a contingency perspective, asserting that the value of modifications depends on when and by whom they're introduced. Empirical research within Wikipedia projects demonstrates that modifications are more helpful when introduced after the receiving project gains experience with the practice and if introduced by members with diverse project experience.
