Effective strategy execution is the cornerstone of success. Whether you're running a niche forum, a social network, or an online support community, the ability to implement your strategy can make or break your community's growth and impact. Let's explore how the principles of strategy execution apply to managing and developing online communities.

The Challenge of Strategy Execution

Online communities, like businesses, face their unique challenges when it comes to executing their strategies. Many community managers have experienced the frustration of setting ambitious goals, only to find themselves struggling to translate them into action. Just as global CEOs wrestle with strategy execution, community leaders grapple with aligning their goals with outcomes.

Myth 1: Execution Equals Alignment

One common myth in strategy execution is the equation of execution with alignment. Some may believe that if everyone in the community is on the same page, success is guaranteed. However, just as in the corporate world, this myth doesn't always hold true.

In online communities, alignment often pertains to having a shared vision and understanding among members and moderators. But the real challenge lies in coordination and collaboration across different community units and functions. A lack of effective coordination can lead to dysfunctional behaviors that undermine the execution of community strategies.

Myth 2: Failure to Coordinate

The failure to coordinate effectively is a significant challenge faced by many online communities. Just as complex organizations must coordinate across units, online communities must ensure that different segments of their community work in harmony to achieve common goals.

For instance, if you have a forum section dedicated to technical support and another for casual discussions, these two units must align their efforts to provide a seamless experience for members. Without structured systems for managing horizontal performance commitments, your community may face difficulties in executing its strategy.

Agility in Online Community Management

Adaptability and agility are paramount in online community management. Unlike traditional businesses, online communities must respond rapidly to changing member needs and evolving trends. Agility allows community managers to seize new opportunities that align with the community's strategy.

While resource allocation is essential, community managers should focus on fluid reallocation of resources like time, effort, and attention. Striking the right balance between resource allocation and reallocation can be challenging but is crucial for effective strategy execution.

Communication and Clarity

In the world of online communities, relentless communication is indeed vital, but it's not just about talking; it's about ensuring that everyone understands the strategic priorities. Community managers often grapple with ensuring that members and moderators are aligned with the community's vision.

Clear and concise communication of strategic objectives is key. Strategic priorities should be well-understood and integrated into the community's daily operations. Effective communication minimizes confusion and ensures that all community members have a clear sense of how initiatives fit together.

Fostering a Performance Culture

Creating a performance culture in online communities involves more than just tracking metrics and numbers. While performance is essential, community managers should also recognize and reward attributes like agility, teamwork, and ambition.

A healthy performance culture values adaptability and the ability to respond to shifting circumstances. Emphasizing performance alone can lead to conservative commitments and favoring cost reductions over growth, which may hinder the execution of innovative strategies.

Building a Coordinated Community

In online communities, fostering coordination is crucial for effective execution. Hiring, promotions, and recognition should align with collaborative efforts rather than just individual performance. Rewarding past achievements should not overshadow the importance of a track record of collaboration.

Top-down execution, where decisions come solely from community leaders or moderators, can have drawbacks. Effective execution in online communities thrives on collaboration, often involving trade-offs and countless decisions made by members at various levels.

In conclusion, the challenges of strategy execution are not unique to the corporate world but extend to the realm of online communities. By dispelling myths, emphasizing coordination, nurturing a performance culture, and fostering collaboration, community leaders can enhance the execution of their community's strategy and create thriving digital spaces.
