Looking for some ideas...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am looking for some ideas on how to take advantage of older posts. So I thought I would solicit some ideas from all of you! 🙂

Our site goes back to 2007. A lot has changed since then! With the exception of a few hundred posts we lost during a migration, I don't know how many years ago, we still have every post. We have been pretty good at moving older topics to an Archive section. The Archives section is made up of several forums. A couple of the forums are for specific topics (a specific event or a professional association) others are general topics, organized by year (2007, 2008, etc). The topics in these forums are locked, and new topics can not be created in the "archive" forums.

Recently, a member asked me if there was any way to browse the locked topics in the archives and them use topics of interest to start a new discussions in one of the active forums. Ideally, I would like to have a feed that pulls and lists the most popular (or read or replied to) topics in the archived forums. Even better would be to list them by a similar discussion.

Has anyone done anything like this? Is there an app out there?

Thanks for any help!

🙂

What a great way to repurpose evergreen content!

Instead of a new or custom application, have you thought about unarchiving part or all of the topics? That would allow you to simply mix in those topics, or create a feed widget of topics, etc.

I wonder if you could also tap into the Leaderboard to highlight content from specific sections.

You can use Saved Actions to automate routine moves.

I have no experience in this but I believe all ever green content should be unlocked where as all topics that are irrelevant today should be locked. Some people like creating new topics instead of opening old topic but I believe as long as the content is still relevant, there is no point in locking it out.

Where is the Leaderboard? Do you mean Our Picks?

If I unlocked all topics, we would have members wishing happy birthday to members who have died years ago. I's happened many times.

I think you need to decide which topics are still suitable for discussion and which are not. I don't run general discussion community, so most of my content is evergreen. One of the major problems with general discussion community is your topics lose relevancy after some time.
