Toni
The look and style of your community, whilst it may be important, also should not be something that is overly worked on. Having a community with a basic look and feel is much of the time what most people are looking for being that they use the community for help and support a lot of the time. Do you offer a basic look for your community or are you someone who prefers to go all out when it comes to a theme?
JoelR
A theme definitely has a certain strategy to it. I can totally understand communities of gaming, pop culture, entertainment, media, or similar having a very vivid theme. At the same time, I also think there's value in simplicity, and purposely letting the focus be on the content and not the visuals.
Maria
I go for simplicity. Communities are used by common people, so there is no need to go after esthetic. The most important thing you should consider is to offer a platform where people are comfortable sharing. If the basic look has it all, I am satisfied with the basic look
Nomad
Yes, I offer basic look. I do not go after elaborate design. My sites are basically content site where visitors can read and interact, so I try to make my site easy to navigate and easy to read and post.
